Impoverished 97-year-old wins big in Vietnam lottery

A poverty-stricken 97-year-old man in Vietnam won up to 400,000 dollars in a lottery, a report said Tuesday, sparking a frenzy among relatives eager to get a piece of his new-found wealth.

A neighbour in southern Ho Chi Minh City and local officials had to step in to stop the elderly man from giving away the windfall to people who had swarmed to his home, Thanh Nien newspaper said.

What was left of the money has gone into a bank account, the newspaper reported.

Nguyen Van Het bagged the prize after spending 100,000 dong (just over five dollars) on lottery tickets from "lucky money" he received ahead of the Lunar New Year, Thanh Nien said.

Small packets of "lucky money" are a traditional Tet gift.

Thanh Nien reported Het's winnings at 7.6 billion dong, or 400,000 dollars, a massive sum in a country where the annual per capita income is about 1,000 dollars.

"We only know he won billions of dong," an official from the Fatherland Front, which implements government social programmes, told AFP.

The official, who declined to be named, said local authorities had to intervene and restore order around the man's home because so many relatives or people claiming to be relatives had turned up asking for money.

Het and his sick wife had been receiving special financial support from authorities because they lived below the poverty line, the Fatherland Front official said.

"We will wait for a few more weeks so that he can calm down before asking him what he wants to do with the money," he said.

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club

I'll need to get spending: Vietnamese peasant wins the lottery... at the age of 97

A Vietnamese peasant who has lived below the poverty line all his life has won a fortune in a lottery - at the age of 97.

Now Nguyen Van Het admits he'll have to hurry up and enjoy his £200,000 win before his time on earth runs out.

'I've been poor all my life and now I've got all this money,' he said at his home in the south of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
With the average annual income in Vietnam just £500, Mr Het admits he'll have a lot of trouble spending the money before he dies.

But he agrees that if he's not careful, relatives, beggars, tricksters and opportunists will try to take it all from him, even though he has now banked his winnings - or what is left of them.

He has already given away a large amount of his windfall to people who have swarmed around his home after word leaked out that he had won the enormous prize in the lottery.

He used 100,000 dong (about £2.50) to buy lottery tickets from what he called 'lucky money' that had been given to him by relatives to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Small packets of 'lucky money' are handed around in family circles as a traditional gift during the lunar celebrations, known as Tet.

Mr Het was so generous with his handouts that a worried neighbour had to call in local officials to stop him giving away his money.

But he still had a lot left over and was persuaded to open up a bank account and deposit it while he and his ailing wife decide how they will spend it.

An official from the Fatherland Front, which oversees government social programmes, said: 'He won billions of dong - he's a very lucky man.

'But unless we had intervened he would have been in danger of losing most of it.

'Relatives and strangers came to his home from all directions asking for a hand-out.'

The official said Mr Het and his wife had been receiving special financial support from the authorities because they were living below the poverty line in a small shack.

'We're going to wait for a few more weeks so that he can calm down,' the official told the Thanh Nien newspaper.

'Then we'll ask him what he wants to do with the money.'

Mr Het said: 'I'll be talking to my wife about it. We probably won't go anywhere. But we might look at finding somewhere nicer to live.'

Anonymous millionaires keep people guessing
================================================== =====

VietNamNet Bridge – Local newspapers recently made public the names of stock millionaires and their assets’ values. Financial experts believe that these are just the tip of the iceberg, since the names of many other millionaires remain unknown.

Unlike many other countries, in Vietnam, assets of people have not been valuated by any agency or independent organization.

Tien Phong newspaper has identified some “big guys” who are believed to have colossal fortunes.

The owner of Dai Nam tourism complex

The Dai Nam Tourism Complex in Binh Duong Province is thought to become the biggest entertainment complex in Southeast Asia. So just who is the owner?

On paper, the project’s investor is Dai Nam Joint Stock Company, in which Huynh Uy Dung holds controlling shares. The company’s predecessors were Thanh Le Joint Stock Company and then Song Than Industrial Zone Development Company.

Dung, well known by his nickname “Dung Lo Voi” (Limekiln), has been cited as a billionaire since the 1990s. People speculate that Dung earned his fortune with successful projects at Song Than 1, 2 and 3 Industrial Zone, each of which covers hundreds of hectares. Dung has also succeeded with many real estate projects in Binh Duong province.

It is estimated that the investment capital disbursed for the Dai Nam project has reached nearly two trillion dong, while the project is expected to be capitalized at 3 trillion dong.

Dai Nam is a joint stock company, but the stock volume held by Dung and family members has not been made public. That explains why people do not know the exact value of Dung’s fortune compared with that of Dang Thanh Tam or Pham Nhat Vuong, the listed stock millionaires.

Now that Dung owns a series of industrial zones, companies and real estate projects and the tourism complex, one can be sure that his total assets have reached many trillions of dong.

Mrs. Tu Huong

After Hoan Cau Company of Nguyen Thi Huong organized Miss Universe in 2008 in Khanh Hoa province, Huong and Hoan Cau have become more well known.

People guess that Huong is now the richest woman in Vietnam, though they cannot measure her stock assets. Many were surprised that Hoan Cau spent more than $10 million to organize the Miss Universe pageant. They spent hundreds of billions of dong within one year to turn Diamond Bay into a complex able to organize the pageant.

Huong now owns a lot of real estate in the central region, HCM City and many other cities. People believe that Huong is in no way inferior to the top 10 men recognized as the richest stock millionaires in Vietnam.

In the early 1990s, Huong was famous for two commercial ventures that potentially offered profits of tens of millions of dollar, enormous sums of money at that time. Huong spent $15 million to build Vinagel and then resold to San Miguel at $25 million. After that, Huong spent five million dollars to build another factory and then sold to Lipovital at $17 million.

The ‘King’ of Tuan Chau Island

Four years ago, Le Figaro in Hanoi had an article about the first billionaires in Vietnam, naming Dao Hong Tuyen, who was called the ‘king’ of Tuan Chau Island. There was also a picture of Ha Long Bay, where Tuan Chau island was turned into a famous tourism complex that received five million tourists in 2005. At that time most people assumed that Tuyen was the richest person in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Finance has since valuated the two out of 14 of his companies at 10 trillion dong, proving showed that the French journalist was correct. Just how wealthy Tuyen actually is remains an unknown.

Kidnappers demanded $10 million for his son

In mid December 2009, a project at Long Toan port complex in Tra Vinh province kicked off with investment capital of 1,700 billion dong from Tram Be. The event reminded people about the kidnapping of Tram Trong Ngan, his son.

Binh, the kidnapper, claimed before the court that he demanded $10 million from Be because he knew that Be was very rich.

Just how rich? Three years ago, one newspaper estimated that Be’s total assets were 2 trillion dong, after considering that Be was the main shareholder of Phuong Nam Bank and Chairman of Trieu An, the biggest private hospital in HCM City.

Meanwhile, Be is also the owner of some tens of other companies with capital of hundreds of billions of dong, including Ham Giang.

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club

A different culture as compared with our chinese society during Lunar New Year

Has the meaning gone out of Tet visits to teachers?
================================================== ===

VietNamNet Bridge – It’s a Vietnamese custom to visit teachers on the third day of the Lunar New Year to express respect to those who teach literacy and give knowledge to people. Some teachers, psychologists and educational managers talked with Dan Tri, an on-line paper, about how modern Vietnamese students keep the tradition.

Nguyen Manh Hung, Head of the Teachers’ Bureau (Ministry of Education and Training):

Calling on teachers on the third day of the New Year is a sacred duty and honour of every student. This is the occasion when students express their deep gratitude to teachers. The gifts students brought to their teachers in the past were very simple, sometimes a dozen of eggs or a hen. Nowadays, the gifts are more diverse. However, the meaning hasn’t changed. Therefore, the 3rd day of Tet is a memorable occasion for all students, I think even more important than November 20, Teachers’ Day.

There are some who say those who call to wish their teachers good fortune in the New Year just want to give gifts in order to get good marks. But in my opinion, there are not many such people.

Pham Tat Dong, Deputy Chairman, Society to Encourage Study (Hội Khuyên học):

The original meaning of this tradition has changed very much. Formerly, only well-off students could pay a visit to their teachers on Tet. Nowadays, everyone does this as a way to pay teachers. This phenomenon is like the domino effect. I can say that nearly all students nowadays go to vísit their teachers, which is odd, because it can’t be said that students nowadays are more studious than previous generations. I think it’s incumbent on the teachers not to accept gifts from students who can’t afford to give them.

Psychologist Dinh Doan:

All Vietnamese know the idiom: “The first day is for Father, the second is for Mother, the third is for Teacher.” It means that teachers should be respected like parents.

The problem is that now many university students visit teachers on Tet days just in quest of good marks. Parents of younger students visit teachers to ask them to grant privileges to their children. Everyone feels uncomfortable. There are few who visit teachers in the true sense of the word “visit.” The custom has been commercialized, and lost its true meaning.

Associate professor Van Nhu Cuong:

Calling on teachers at special times, giving them small presents to express their respect, is a nice old tradition. I remember when I was small, I saw a student giving a chicken to my father, who was also a teacher. My father refused to take it because a chicken could cost a fortune at that time. The student insisted, saying that the chicken was raised by his family. My father was moved by that boy’s heart.

Many people say that this tradition has been totally ‘commercialized’, but I think that people exaggerate. Recently, I also received a present basket from a class’s parents. It’s their initiative, their feeling, and it deserves to be respected.

Nguyen Tung Lam, Headmaster of Dinh Tien Hoang High School:

Visiting teachers at Tet is a normal way for students to express respect for their teachers. Most students still sincerely express their sentiments in a correct way. Actually, the presents which students give their teachers on the occasion of Tet are moderate, just envelopes with one or two hundred thousand dong inside, or a wine bottle or biscuit box.

However, it is true that many of students are just hoping to improve their marks when they visit teachers. We shouldn’t condemn teachers, because it will harm the relationship between teachers and students.

Budget air market heats up
========================================
VietNamNet Bridge – Viet Nam-based air carriers operating domestic and international flights are expected to encounter tougher competition when the new budget airline Vietjet-AirAsia becomes operational in May this year.

The new low-cost carrier, which was established after Viet Nam's first private low-cost carrier Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Co (Vietjet Air) sold a 30 per cent stake to Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd, offers passengers opportunities to fly at lower prices and also a wider variety of destinations to choose from.

AirAsia representative in Viet Nam Bui Duc Hanh said procedures for the purchase had been completed and that the share acquisition was approved by the Ministry of Transport on February 9.

The establishment of the new air joint venture is expected to take back the slice of the domestic aviation market that had fallen into the hands of national flag carrier Viet Nam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific Airlines when Indochina Airlines had its licence revoked earlier this year.

Trinh Hong Quang, deputy general director of Viet Nam Airlines, was quoted by online newspaper VietNamNet as saying that the new joint venture's partner, AirAsia, had begun Viet Nam services five years ago. He added the country's aviation market was still undergoing development and offers equal opportunities for every airline that competes for a share in it.

Despite the losses suffered by the Jetstar Pacific Airlines (JPA) in 2009, the general director of the joint stock company, Le Song Lai, said he remained optimistic about the expansion of the domestic aviation market.

Although local airlines have expressed their optimism about the future development of the local aviation market, there were concerns about the newcomer's competitiveness because as a private carrier, Vietjet-AirAsia can be flexible about making business decisions.

Viet Nam Airlines is a 100 per cent State-owned company while JPA is a joint stock company in which the State holds a 70 per cent stake.

In a statement released on Wednesday, AirAsia said the joint venture with Vietjet would help AirAsia enhance the company's ASEAN regional expansion plans by providing the airline with additional routes and destinations.

Meanwhile, in addition to the plan to launch the Ha Noi-Yangon air route in early March, national flag carrier Viet Nam Airlines has increased its flights on the HCM City-Bangkok route, from one to two daily flights from December 2009, and has enhanced its air route networks linking Viet Nam with Laos and Cambodia.

PM Dung calls for timely completion of Can Tho Bridge
===============================================

The new Can Tho Bridge will facilitate development of the Mekong Delta region as a whole, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Friday, calling for the project’s completion on schedule in March.

During his visit to the construction site, PM Dung praised the efforts of the project management, contractors and workers and asked them to ensure the work’s progress.

The bridge on the Hau River is expected to be completed by the end of March and officially opened to traffic on April 30, the National Reunification Day.

Southeast Asia’s longest cable-stayed bridge will link Can Tho City with Vinh Long Province, cutting travel time by more than 30 minutes compared with using ferries.

Construction of the US$342 million project began in September 2004 with aid from Japan.

A section of the bridge collapsed during construction in September 2007, killing 54 people and injuring 80. The project was delayed following the accident and could not meet its original deadline of December 14, 2008.

Yesterday I just know a WL from 1 of the JC pubs. Feeling bored today, i cheekily smsed to the girl A dien cuong vi em.

Naturally she replied back : Tai sao? A vua moi gap e luc toi ma.
I know she's asking why I'm crazy for her as we only just met.
But can any bro explain to me what is the meaning of luc toi ma?

Later in the afternoon, she smsed to me : E sap ve VN ko con o Sin nua.
A biet e nhieu hon de lam gi?
Can anyone help me with this sentence? I can only guess that she's going back to VN soon.

Then in the evening, we made appointment to have dinner near her workplace. But suddenly she smsed to me : E met nen ko di an duoc.
This I really need help as I only know that met=tired and di an=go eat.

Anyway this girl quite xao nhieu nhieu. Where got people tired so cannot eat, but can go to work at ktv?

I also noticed that most Vn girls like to replace co with ko. Why they like that?

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club

Naturally she replied back : Tai sao? A vua moi gap e luc toi ma.
I know she's asking why I'm crazy for her as we only just met.
But can any bro explain to me what is the meaning of luc toi ma?

Luc toi literally means 'at the moment at night'... which can be simplified to be 'that night'.

Later in the afternoon, she smsed to me : E sap ve VN ko con o Sin nua.
A biet e nhieu hon de lam gi?
Can anyone help me with this sentence? I can only guess that she's going back to VN soon.

I going back to VN soon. Will not be in sgp anymore. You know more about me for what?

Then in the evening, we made appointment to have dinner near her workplace. But suddenly she smsed to me : E met nen ko di an duoc.
This I really need help as I only know that met=tired and di an=go eat.

I'm tired therefore I can't go eat

I also noticed that most Vn girls like to replace co with ko. Why they like that?

co and ko are 2 different words
