First post in months and I'm in a bloody viet thread, haiz ... all the gangs' fault.

Anways, is there any use in actually listing the words without a viet gal mumbling them into your ears?

Tried to pick up simple ones these months and gave up and just figured those viet mouths are built differently from mine. However I tried, never quite get the tones right. Thai is so much easier.

Now ... my love for those girls that can't talk only last as long as my patience with not being able to communicate ... can't be bothered no more, they more free than me (plus getting money from me), let them learn MY language for a change.

If u are able to write, then you get the gal to translate for u, mumbling into your ears. IF u cant speak, cant write, cant understand, thats worst.

yup, that's the course fee exclude $25 registration fee...think Cambridge school also about the same price...

tot you quite fluent with your Viet language liao especially those "dirty" words.. ....to learn standard would be too boring for you leh..

You can learn Vietnamese without going for classroom lessons. There're many CD-based, self-learn courses out there. Of course, not all are good. Without making this post sound like a commercial advertisement, let me know if you're interested in this approach. The one I tried is effective. Now I'm able to speak simple but gramatically-correct Tieng Viet. It sure beats just looking at the words on screen.

That's y need to learn proper language lor...Cannot b so "ham sup" all the time de lah. If can grasp the essence of tieng viet, then I'm considering targeting those SYT OL...

There are two highly-recommended approaches to learning a new language out there. One of them is the Pimsleur Approach and this is the one behind the CD set that I got. I can't remember the name of the other one.

I find the method of learning very effective. When you listen to the CDs and repeat after the native speakers, you aren't simply memorising phrases mindlessly. Rote-learning doesn't help. Yes, you do learn new words and phrases, but more importantly, you learn the grammar too. You learn how words are stringed together to form proper phrases/sentences and so on. Then as you learn more new words, they get you to recall what you had learnt earlier (to move the words from temporary storage to permanent storage within your brain) and also to form new phrases by using mix and match (for example, they first teach you "Where is Orchard Road?" and "I want to eat in a restaurant", then later, you're challenged to form a new question on your own, "Where is the restaurant?").

I don't want to sound like I'm working for the publisher of the courseware, so you might want to do a search on Google. Use the keywords "Pimsleur approach". You can also visit www.pimsleurapproach.com. This site belongs to one of the many authorised resellers appointed by Simon and Schuster, Inc, the original publisher. I bought my Quick & Simple Vietnamese CD from them. However, since finding other resellers, I have ordered the next level courseware from someone else -- much cheaper!
