Published 7 hours ago BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AFP) - Two Indonesian men were caned on Tuesday (May 23) in front of a jeering crowd as a punishment for gay sex, in a first for the Muslim-majority country where there is mounting hostility towards the small LGBT community. The pair received 83 strokes of the cane each after being found guilty of breaking syariah rules in conservative Aceh province, the only part of Indonesia that implements Islamic law. The men, aged 20 and 23, were led onto a raised stage outside a mosque in front of a crowd of thousands, who jeered and booed loudly. The pair, whose identities have not been revealed, were dressed in white robes and bowed their heads as they were whipped by officials wearing brown cloaks and masks with eye slits. Before the caning, Abdul Gani Isa, a member of the Acehnese clerics' council, told the crowd the caning was "a lesson for the public". 42590590_-_17_05_2017_-_indonesia-crime-sharia-homosexsuality.jpg Two Indonesian men arrive for their trials at a syariah court in Banda Aceh on May 17, 2017. Their sentences, which were carried out in the provincial capital Banda Aceh, were reduced by two strokes of the cane due to time already served in detention. The gay men were caught together in March by vigilantes who burst into the house where they were staying. Shaky phone footage of the raid that circulated online showed the vigilantes kicking, slapping and insulting the men, with one of them slumped naked on the ground during the attack. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news...784-1495556025 Publicly flogged for being gay in Indonesia Cheered on by a jeering crowd, Muhammad Taufik receives 85 strokes of the cane. Amanda Hodge South East Asia correspondent Jakarta @hodgeamanda Standing head bowed on a stage before a jeering crowd, Muhammad Taufik took blow after blow from a yellow cane as the post-noon prayers audience in Indonesia’s Aceh province cheered every stroke. The 23-year-old’s crime was to have had consensual sex with his partner Muhammad Habibi, 20, a medical student whose own punishment and public humiliation followed soon after. The two young men yesterday became the first in modern Indonesian history to be punished by the state for their homosexuality, and even by the conservative Islamic standards of Aceh province the sentence was steep: 85 lashes each of a rattan cane. Barefoot and trembling, a clearly terrified Mr Habibi wept and muttered prayers for strength during his caning but appeared to crumble half-way through, prompt*ing officials to call off his hooded punisher while attendants tried to calm the young man. Fifteen minutes later the caning resumed. Deep in a crowd of more than 1000 onlookers, watching and flinching as his countrymen catcalled and heckled his child’s suffering, Mr Habibi’s father told The Australian he was devastated by the punishment. “I know he has done something wrong. He has sinned, but must he be punished like this?” he asked. “I can’t understand how this has happened. Have I failed as a parent? “I sent him to Banda Aceh to study but maybe he got mixed up with the wrong people. “He has learned his lesson. He is remorseful. But seeing him in pain like this is very hard for me. I want to send him to an Islamic boarding school after this. Maybe that way he can return to being a good Muslim.” The two men were among five young couples caned yesterday in a public square of the provincial capital Banda Aceh, rebuilt after the devastating Boxing Day tsunami with the help of Australian aid and assistance. Aceh is the only Indonesian province to impose sharia law after it was granted the right to introduce the Islamic legal code more than a decade ago. But it was only in 2015 that it fully enforced a strict criminal code outlawing alcohol, adultery, homosexuality and public displays of affection outside legally recognised relationships for both Muslims and non-Muslims. Homosexuality is not illegal anywhere else in Indonesia although intolerance is increasing noticeably across the country. On Sunday Jakarta police raided what they alleged was a gay sex party, arresting 141 people and charging 10 of them with crimes under the country’s pornography laws. All 141 were still in detention late yesterday. The operation was the latest in a series of arrests targeting the LGBT community in recent weeks. The four heterosexual couples punished in Aceh yesterday received between 21 and 27 strokes of the cane each for the crime of “kissing and cuddling”. But Aceh’s sharia court was determined to make an example of the young gay men, who were arrested in March after vigilantes broke into their rented room and attempted to film them having consensual sex. Their punishment of 85 lashes was five more than the prosecution had demanded. Among the crowd was 45-year-old banker Munawar Hasan, who told The Australian he had left work to witness the “historic” event. “This is the first time someone was flogged for having gay sex and the people of Aceh have been waiting for so long to see them punished. This is a sharia province,” he said. “For the LGBT movement to come and infiltrate our beloved land is unacceptable. I hope this sends a message they’re not welcome here. If the LGBT community continues to promote their lifestyle here I am sure the punishment will be even harsher.” One well-known LGBTI activist, who flew to Banda Aceh to support the two men, was forced into hiding yesterday after the editor of a local Islamist newsletter posted a message on Facebook calling on vigilantes from the hard-line Islamic Defenders Front to “kick out” the activist. “I would say this is going to be copied by other provinces through other local mandatory by-laws,” Human Rights Watch Indonesia researcher Andreas Harsono warned. “Curfews at night, separation between men and women in swimming pools, on beaches … “Let the race to the bottom begin.” Click here to view the whole thread at www.sammyboy.com. |
