-- Twelve news websites and two online magazines have been fined for a false report on the suicide of a 11-year-old boy in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai. Vietnamese singer wins MTV EMA’s Best Southeast Asian Act

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 11/07/2016 11:49 GMT + 7

http://tuoitrenews.vn/lifestyle/3788...east-asian-act

Vietnamese pop icon Dong Nhi won Best Southeast Asian Act at the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMA) on Sunday.

Dong Nhi was Vietnam’s nomination in the category, which included six other artists from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

The announcement was published on the MTV Asia site at 10:00 pm on Sunday, four hours prior to the live awards ceremony in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, early on Monday morning Vietnam time.

The MTV EMA’s are an annual award presented by U.S.-based music and entertainment channel MTV that honors artists worldwide for significant contributions to the music industry. Winners of EMA’s 18 award categories are chosen based on an online fan vote.

This is the first year the EMA’s have awarded Best Southeast Asian Act as a separate category, having previously served as a subcategory for the Best Asian Act award at previous EMA’s.

Dong Nhi becomes Vietnam’s first recognized winner of the category, despite Vietnamese singers My Tam and Son Tung M-TP having previously topped Southeast Asian voting in both 2013 and 2015 respectively.

Active since 2007, Dong Nhi is a popular singer amongst Vietnamese youths, known for her hit love songs and mesmerizing choreography in her music videos.

As Waistlines Grow, So Does Vietnam’s Fitness Industry

Published on Monday, 07 November 2016 15:35 Written by Saigoneer

Combined with the country’s newfound middle-income status and robust economic growth, the prevalence of obesity is bringing about new business opportunities in Vietnam.

With the influx of western fast food chains and a decline in physical activity, demand for fitness center memberships continues to grow despite ever-increasing prices, reports Nikkei Asian Review.

These memberships, which include access to dance and yoga lessons and, in some cases, personal training (PT) sessions, have ballooned in major cities like Hanoi, Da Nang and Saigon. Today, the cost of a PT session in Vietnam is on par with the same service in Japan, priced at approximately VND500,000 (US$22) per hour, according to the news outlet.

“It's expensive, but I'll do my best to lose weight, because I've gained some recently,” 25-year-old Pham Thi Hoan Linh, a member of a gym run by the California Management Group (CMG) in Hanoi, told Nikkei.

Linh is not alone in this. According to the news source, World Health Organization statistics say obesity among Vietnamese men has more than tripled in the past decade, while obesity rates among Vietnamese women have jumped a staggering 80% in that same time frame.

While Vietnam still has the lowest rates of obesity in Southeast Asia, this sharp uptick over the past few years has caused concern among public health officials. Particularly among younger generations, the lack of physical activity has led to a spike in obesity rates for urban children. Rates have climbed as high as 40% in major cities, Nikkei writes, citing a survey by the country’s National Institute of Nutrition.

As a result, fitness and health-oriented businesses are racing to expand in Vietnam, and there is high demand for such services. According to Nikkei, CMG alone plans to increase the number of gyms in its network to 100 by 2020. Meanwhile, Elite Fitness, one of CMG’s major rivals, has set up a fitness program that includes meal planning priced at US$350 a month.

Smaller gyms are also gearing up for the competition. Saigon-based 8020Fit, which has been in operation since 2015, offers six-week programs for US$444 to US$890. In addition to PT, these programs include personalized nutrition advice and tailored meal deliveries six times a week. 8020Fit’s customer base has reportedly doubled from last year to 600 members.

As Vietnam continues to grow economically, the future of its health and fitness industries certainly shows promise, however it remains to be seen whether flashy gyms and high-end nutrition programs will combat the country’s growing rates of obesity.

Tale of Two Cities: Hanoi Preserves While Saigon Reaches for the Sky

Published on Tuesday, 08 November 2016 10:00 Written by Saigoneer.

Vietnam's two biggest cities are pursuing disinct urban growth models, with Saigon favoring a dense downtown while Hanoi spreads into new satellite cities.

City Lab recently looked at the growth of Vietnam's primary metropolises, arguing that Saigon favors demolition while Hanoi is more aware of preservation. For example, the news source cites the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Development Management Support Center, which says that over 200 French colonial-era villas were torn down or renovated between 1994 and 2014.

Meanwhile, in Hanoi, the city People's Committee has banned developments more than 24 stories high in five central districts, including Hoan Kiem and its famous Old Quarter.

Dr. William Logan, author of Hanoi: Biography of a City, tells CityLab: "perhaps in he 1990s, things were more flexible and there were some high rises built in the place of colonial villas. But now the authorities seem to have taken control of that so high rise buildings now occur in pockets well out from the Old Quarter."

Dr. Logan compares Hanoi's growth to the "Paris Model", in which the historic city center is preserved while large new projects are relegated to the outskirts. He argues that this is a highly effective strategy, as the city is still able to grow through high rises and business parks while maintaining its ancient core, which attracts tourism revenue.

Saigon, meanwhile, is pursuing a more American approach by focusing on an impressive downtown, the expert tells the news source. Just in the last two years the historic Ba Son Shipyard has been torn down to make way for a massive Vinhomes development, Nguyen Hue Walking Street has transformed a major thoroughfare, the Saigon Tax Center has met its demise, Saigon Center phase two has sprouted up on Le Loi and part of 23/9 Park has been fenced off for construction of a metro station.

CityLab compares this development spree with the battle to save Long Bien Bridge, an icon of Hanoi. A decision to demolish the 114 year-old bridge was proposed in 2007 and 2014, and both times the bridge survived, while authorities have agreed to build a new bridge over the Red River to accommodate a metro line.

Dr. Ngo Minh Hung, a Saigon-based architect and development expert, worries that Saigon's progress-focused mindset may cause the city to lose its cultural identity. "They should take a step back and assess what the identity for [Saigon] is and figure out if they want to make it different in comparison to other cities," he tells CityLab. "Or in the future, [Saigon] will just look like Hong Kong or Shanghai, no more Saigon."
