On 12 Oct 2005 (Wed) morning while taking ferry back to Habour Front from Batam Centre, 2 ferry vessels were being stopped by Sg Police Coast Guards speed boat outside the coast of Rasa Sentosa. The coast guards boarded the ferries to perform routine checks.

After crossing over the metal detector gate (before claiming luggage), all were told to step forward and stand still to allow the security personnel to do another closer check by using the hand-held metal detector.

According to Shin Min Daily News (13 Oct 2005), Gukhar police constables with MP5 rifles are seen deployed at Habour Front arrival hall nowadays. The papers also state that coast guards will conduct on-board security checks on those ferries arriving to Sg.

Note: for those who are rushing for time to get back to office/home when returning from Riau islands via ferries, please give about 15-20 minutes time allowance on your time schdule .. and mentally prepared for such checks.

Thats becos I send radio message to the coast guard HQ not to check our vessel cos confirm there is not threat; only got 2 'chicken worms'

Like most of past years, during this fasting mth most of the flesh outlets are close. However, they do break the rules i.e. you enter the outlets by the rear entrance. But be discreet to avoid unnecessary trouble with the polisi. Damages on the average varies fm 200k w/o driver.

Yes,Bro Dnat. Over at TMFT, the moment the ferry reached the jetty and as the crowd came out of the ferry, there were at least 10 plain clothes security personnel (could be ISD) at the pantoon stopping and checking some of the indon pax. I immediately hold my passport to make known that I am a sporean to avoid being "interrogated" unnecessary cos I was in a hurry for another appt. Security real tight!

If they really want to attack, they will do it on the boat liao. Where the need to reach singapore? A lot of singaporeans travel on boat. However, usually, there are screening on the indo customs liao. Even I dont really trust the security here. However, go to the point to check when they reach your cuctoms?

Making most of our brothers coming to batam for fun more scared. As if the police here not $$$ face enough. Batam has been hit by the closure of the casinos liao. Many gals not making $$$. Due to less tourist.

And think about these officers on boat to spot check. What message are you try to send? Singapore is very strict? Come on man, if they want to bring it in. THere are 1001 ways to do it.

I believe intelligence is more important. And education among the muslim community is equally important as well.

Just my 2 cents

but at least we dont give up
singapore never gives up in anything easily
thats why we are a clean and discipline island
though everytime people complains about our stringent rules
remember how we successfully fought SARS?

To be honest, if you really want to be 100% sure, you dont check at random. YOU HAVE TO CHECK ALL THE FERRIES B4 IT REACHES THE JETTY. What if the terrorists were in the ferries which were not screen by the PCG? So, my question is will the authorities take the trouble to inspect ALL (and not at random) arriving ferries?

Terrorist not likely to attack ferry because mostly Indonesians & cheongsters on board. Not too many ang mos.

Customs check at WTC already high compared to JB-S'pore entry point, because they want to stop the working gals & illegal indo workers from entering S'pore. Often see immigration officers giving the Indos a hard time.

People comming back to Spore from Batam with diving knife also kena alot of questions. Don't know why as can get knives in S'pore

Also see the machine gun toting gurkhas at Spore immigration point when leaving S'pore for JB. Don't know why they there, terrorist leaving Spore is good, terrorist wanting to enter S'pore is bad right?

All this very wayang. In US, Europe, machine gun carrying police have never caught any terrorist at immigration checkpoints. So after Bali II Spore want to show got security so all the wayang.
