Bro, I try to answer and see if my view is right or not. Still learning about the many rules also. Based on my view, firstly, you can't be offside if you are in your own half when the ball is released. When the ball was booted away from inside our penalty box, Gerrard and Torres are still deep inside our half. We can't be offside if the players are in our own half when the ball is released. That's why when you play football, the defenders will push as high as the half way line to play the offside trap.

2ndly, Torres was running behind Gerrard all the way. So Torres is onside.

if i m not wrong, the offside rule is not about the last man, but the last 2 men, including the goalkeeper. so, it is usually the goalie and a defender.

but i have always wondered... if the goalie goes up to contest for a corner or freekick or go take a freekick deep in the opposition half, then what???

no matter, just thinking aloud...

Bro, first part of the last 2 men, that is usually what people understand to be the offside rule. However, in my last explanation, I did highlight an exception to the rule, that is, if you are in your own half. There are several other exceptions as well. The offside rule doesn't apply when you are receiving a ball from a goal kick, corner kick or throw-in (think Stoke City).

Please refer to FIFA.com - The Laws of the Game. Download the PDF and refer to page 34 of 138. Quite simple yet useful explanation of how soccer rules apply.

I wonder if we will buy any players this transfer window. A flair right winger will be great. Then Kuyt can replace Keane as the 2nd striker. Joaquim..... Joaquim...

No offside from a goal kick bro? Imagine if you have a big kicker like Friedel and you put Crouch and Heskey in the penalty box to wait for the kick. If I'm not wrong, the offside rule is to prevent players from crowding the box and goal area like that.

But the rules really state that there's no offside from a goal kick. The source is from Fifa's official website. Until this season (Stoke City), I also won't know that free throws have no offside rules. Even till now, not many teams can attack a free throw like Stoke City's Delap.

For the goal kick weapon to apply, you need an accurate, powerful and consistent goal kick from your keeper. Not many keepers can do that with their goal kicks. Plus it can cause ligament/muscular damage if your legs aren't warmed up properly. If Friedel can do it consistently, I'm sure it can be a legal weapon.

If the goal kick no offside rule don't apply, teams can line up the centre line with all 10 outfield players. Then when the goalie kicks the ball into their opponent's half, it will be offside immediately. That would make the game quite silly to watch.

I know that you are never offside when you are in your own half when the ball is being passed..

Oh ya.. No offside too from throw in regardless where you are...

And in opponent half, your own player must be as least on the same line as the opponet last man (GK is never involved in offiside as he is never counted in) when the ball is being passed...

But eversince they start the "got interfere. no interfere" rule, they make themsleves confused...
