VietNamNet Bridge – The seats at “star schools” are getting more and more expensive, since the demand is too high, while the supply is limited. Brokers now offer to sell seats at the schools at 3000 dollars (60 million dong) for each.


How much is a seat at star school?

Tuyet Lan, a mother in Cau Giay district, said that she has been moving heaven and earth to register a seat at TH Primary School for her son, Nguyen Duc. However, to date, she is still not sure if the boy can enroll in the school.

Lan has been told that in order to be able to enroll in the school, she needs to pay about 1000 dollars (20 million dong). Lan accepts that price, provided that the son can study at a prestigious school.

However, she still is not sure, if the sum of money can help, because the headmaster of the school has told her that the school needs to prioritize the students who live in some certain areas as requested by the local education department, and it will only consider other cases later.

Lan is not the only mother who feels anxious about their children’s seats at star schools. Phuong, a mother in Ba Dinh district, also complained that choosing school for the daughter has caused a headache to all members of her family.

According to Phuong, several months ago, she met a broker, who promised to arrange a seat for her daughter at KD Primary School, a prestigious school in the district, if she agreed to pay 1000 dollars. However, after that, in March, the broker said the “seat price” rose to 1300 dollars. The price once again was raised to 1500 dollars in May.

Phuong accepted to pay 1500 dollars, because she thought the price was not too high if her daughter can study at a good school and with good teachers. However, in late May, the broker demanded 1700 dollars which is really unaffordable for her. Phuong said now she has to register a seat at a middle school for the child.

Education forums these days are full of the entries about choosing primary schools for children. On webtretho, a well-known forum, there have been more than 300 comments of parents, who share experiences about how to choose schools and teachers. A member with the nick “Thienlam23” asked for help from other members, as she wants to obtain a seat at Dang Tran Con A Primary School in Thanh Xuan district. Especially, the member wants her child to study with teachers Huyen or Hoa.

Viet, a father in Ba Dinh District, said that he has luckily obtained a seat at TA Primary School for his daughter after paying 1000 dollars worth of the “underground fee”. He said that the sum of money is “reasonable” and acceptable, if comparing with the sums of tuitions students of non-state owned primary schools have to pay. A friend of Viet’s told him that he has to pay 3000 dollars for a seat at another school in Ba Dinh district.

Parents’ race causes chaos in the society

Former Minister of Education and Training Pham Minh Hac, now Chair of the Vietnam Psychological Education Science Society, said that the children, who can study at good schools and with good teachers, will have better conditions to develop. Therefore, it is understandable why parents try to choose the best schools for their children. However, he said, choosing schools with money, thus causing chaos in the society must be unacceptable.

A poll conducted recently by the Vietnam Society of Study Encouragement showed that 62 percent of polled parents admitted that they used close relations with VIP, or money to register study for their children at star schools.

A lot of parents, who do have enough patience and money, have to give up the race for star schools. In this case, they have to let their children go to middle schools. However, they still try to send the children to the classes run by prestigious teachers.

Hang Phuong, a mother in Long Bien district, said that after a lot of thoughts, she has decided to send the child to a school near her house, but she will have to ask a prestigious teacher to give tutoring lessons to the child, because she fears the child may lag behind other classmates.

Lee Kirby is not new to many young Internet users in Vietnam and it is clear why the English man has captured many Vietnamese hearts. He now plans to sing his way down the country.


He speaks Vietnamese well, and sings Vietnamese’s all time favorites even better.

From the iconic “Diem Xua” by the legendary Trinh Cong Son, to a more contemporary “Uoc Gi” by pop singer My Tam or a touch of folk songs with “Beo Dat May Troi,” Lee has proved music can be a powerful channel to approach a new culture.

In 2002, the Londoner made his first trip to Vietnam and fell in love with the country’s melodies and language.

He went back and learned “Song Ve Dau” by Trinh Cong Son, his first Vietnamese song with a Vietnamese student studying A-level at Ashbourne College, where he still works.

Lee has been back and forth ever since, traveling around the country and even performing at some upscale cafes in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

His favorite venues, however, are in the streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, its beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake or Saigon’s large parks and myriads of street cafes where he loves wandering around with a group of friends and his acoustic guitar.

Not surprisingly, the hang-out habit seems to have inspired Lee’s most recent plan to engage his talent to a wider audience.

“I am going to travel from North to South from July 15 to August 15, and I will sing along the trip and everywhere I can,” Lee said.

He said he is ready to sing Vietnamese at the park, on the bus, the rice paddy fields or under a tree’s shadow, adding that bringing simple joy to people he comes across on his way makes him happy.

“I used to sing for people I just met in the countryside where I traveled before. We gathered under a tree and sang together. I am happy that I can share interesting moments with these people I met for the first time, who all lead very hard lives and seldom have any form of entertainment.”

Four of Lee’s Vietnamese friends will join him in this trip and they too will sing popular songs.

For him, apart from Trinh Cong Son and Tran Tien, he is perfecting folk songs as well as Le Cat Trong Ly’s and Nguyen Duc Cuong’s, young composers that are taking the music scene by storm.

Until now, Lee’s collection boasts more than 20 Vietnamese songs, all sang with precise and emotional pronunciations.

“It takes me only five hours to be able to sing a Vietnamese song, but singing well and with emotions require a lot of work. I am not afraid to do what I love, to try new things and not care too much what others may think.”

His favorite motto is, “Do what you love before you get old and have no time left.”

He said he is considering quitting his job at Ashbourne, which belongs to his father, to move to Vietnam.

VietNamNet Bridge – The babyhood of Vietnam children seems to becoming shorter because they have to begin learning at the year of four or five instead of six. Vietnamese parents now force their 5-year-old children to practice writing before they officially go to primary schools.




“I never thought before that my child should begin learning at the age of five. However, I now feel worried when hearing that children of my friends all can read and write already. Therefore, I have to bring my child to intensive mathematics and writing practicing classes now to prepare him for the first grade,” said Nu, a parent in Linh Dam residential quarter in Hanoi.

Every day, she and her husband take turns to bring the son to tutoring class and pick him from the class which is five kilometers far away from their house.

Ngoc, a mother in Kim Lien area in Hanoi, also said that she has asked her son to practice writing since after-Tet days.

“Previously, I thought that the curriculum for first graders was simple and no need to force my daughter to learn writing and reading in advance. However, it was my wrong decision,” Ngoc said.

Ngoc’s first child began going to school two years ago. On the first days at school, the teacher told Ngoc that her child was the worst in the class in terms of writing. As a result, Ngoc had to spend her evenings with the daughter until 11 pm, when both of them practiced writing and solved mathematics questions.

Ngoc said that she has learned lessons from the first child and she has been hurrying the second child to attend tutoring classes. “Now the boy can read and write fluently. However, I still ask him to continue practicing, because all other children now can read and write before they go to the first grade,” she said

A lot of parents have got rattled over the children’s learning, as the new academic year will come in just two months, and they fear that their children do not have much time more to practice writing and reading.

On education forums, parents these days always ask each other about how to find tutors for their 5-year-old children. A lot of writing skill and mathematics practicing centers have been mushrooming to meet the increasingly high demand from parents.

Lien Huong, the manager of a writing practicing center located on Chua Boc street in Hanoi, said that right on the after-Tet days, a lot of parents have come and registered writing practicing classes for their children. Most of the children are preparing for the first grade. However, there are also the children who were born in 2006, which means that they will only begin going to primary school in 2012.

Lien said that some mothers registered two consecutive practicing hours for their children, saying that they cannot arrange time to pick up the children. However, the teachers of the center did not agree, saying that three consecutive practicing hours would be overloaded for the children.

“The children at the age of five remain small, who still prefer playing than learning, therefore, it is impossible to force them to learn too much,” Lien explained. “Moreover, their hands remain weak, and they get weary quickly. The thing that children at the age need to do is just to make acquainted with letters”.

At the age of four or five, many children feel like fish out of water when they come to classes. Some parents have to sit next to their children at the classes to calm the children down. A lot of parents have complained that children nowadays are less happy than the previous generations.

Dang Thi Le Thuy from Smile’s House, a children’s skill practicing center, said that most of parents want to provide as much knowledge to children as possible, fearing that they would lag behind classmates if they do not learn lessons in advance. However, she believes that this may bring more harm than good.

Psychologists believe that when children remain small, it would be a task beyond children’s capacity to ask them to write continuously for more than 20 minutes.

The difficulties children meet when practicing writing before their age would bring negative impacts to children, because this can decline the eagerness for learning. Meanwhile, there has been no scientific evidence showing that children’s handwriting will be better if they begin practicing writing soon.
