Close scrutiny of transfer likely to delay Tevez debut for United

Carlos Tevez may not be eligible to play for Manchester United in time for the start of the Premiership season this weekend, a Premier League spokesman confirmed yesterday.

United face Reading on Sunday and there is a distinct possibility that the paperwork will not be completed quickly enough for the 23-year-old Argentine to feature. "We are ensuring that the contract and third-party agreements are in line with the Premier League rules and that will take a bit of time," the spokesman said.

Asked what the time-frame is likely to be for the deal to be finally completed, he replied: "It's difficult to say. These are complex arrangements and have to be scrutinised. That is what everyone would expect, especially with this transfer."

The Premier League insist they are under no pressure from United to push through that paperwork. "As they said right at the outset of this, they want it done in the right way to comply with the Premier League, the spokesman added.

He said it was "possible" that Tevez would be eligible for this weekend but added: "It's more important that it is done correctly rather than quickly. We are focused on that and it will be carefully scrutinised. There will be no rush."

West Ham are no longer involved in the saga, having received the £2m compensation package agreed last Friday with Tevez's representative Kia Joorabchian. The money was transferred on Tuesday.

Tevez has been training with United for some time and had hoped to play in last night's friendly at Dunfermline. The further delay will annoy manager Sir Alex Ferguson who said last Sunday that the striker would be in his squad for that particular game.

There was one unexpected appearance in last night's 4-0 win over Dunfermline, with Paul Scholes playing for 90 minutes. Scholes was expected to miss the start of the season having returned home from the club's pre-season tour for an exploratory knee operation.

Tevez, who will earn around £90,000-a-week, is joining United on a two-year loan deal from the companies that effectively own his economic rights with the option for the Premiership champions to then sign him permanently for a further three years. The total fee involved is expected to be up to £35m.

An older striker safely on United's books, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is excited by the imminent arrival of Tevez and by Ferguson's summer shopping. " Sir Alex has survived at this club for 20 years so he knows what he's doing," Solskjaer said. "Last year we signed Michael Carrick after three years without winning the league. The trust and belief he had in us then was very important, in terms of developing the team. Now he's challenging everyone again by signing a few exciting players."

However, behind the fight to be part of a team that has now won nine Premiership titles, Solskjaer explains that Ferguson still tries to keep a balance. He says: "The gaffer tries to instil in us every day the idea of enjoying our football and expressing ourselves. But you're not out on the training pitch having a laugh."

Solskjaer had his finest moment when he struck the winning goal in the European Cup final in 1999 against Bayern Munich. However, that eight-year wait for a third European Cup is not something the club should count on ending, as he cautions that "maybe 10 clubs" can win the Champions League this season.

Man Utd boosted by Scholes return

Scholes was a major doubt for the start of the season Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has made a quicker return to fitness than expected after playing in the 4-0 friendly win over Dunfermline.

Scholes, 32, was injured during a pre-season game against FC Seoul in United's Asia tour and returned to England for exploratory knee operation.

But Scholes was in a strong United team at East End Park, that also included Owen Hargreaves and Ryan Giggs.

Scholes' involvement means he could play against Reading on Sunday.

United coach Mike Phelan said: "Paul has worked really hard, his injury is fine and he's in contention for the weekend."

Another United XI, including new signings Anderson and Nani, ran out 3-0 winners against Glentoran in Belfast on Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo was not included in either squad but the winger is expected to shake off a minor ankle knock in time for United's Premier League opener.

Fletcher salutes Owen impact

MANCHESTER United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes the addition of Owen Hargreaves and Carlos Tevez can help the star-packed Old Trafford squad challenge on all four fronts this season.

The Red Devils flexed their muscles on Wednesday night by sending one side to Belfast for a friendly with Glentoran and another team to East End Park to play in Scott Thomson's testimonial, both matches resulting in victory for the visitors.

Hargreaves made his first appearance in a red jersey since signing from Bayern Munich at East End Park although Tevez's protracted move from West Ham had not been finalised in time for him to travel.

But Fletcher, 23, believes United are now ready for a tilt at the Champions League, Carling Premier League and the two domestic cup competitions.

He said: "We've added to the squad, it's top quality and we have the numbers to compete for everything this season.

"You can more or less play 11-a-side in training and it keeps everyone sharp.

"Everyone is competing for their place and you know that if you get a chance then you have to take it.

"The manager wants a selection headache. It's better that way than struggling without enough players.

"And if you want to contend for the four trophies then we will need a big squad because towards the end of the season you will pick up injuries and suspensions

Impressed

"Hargreaves looked great against Dunfermline. Obviously he has not played as many games as he would have liked because he picked up a little injury but he looks fit now and he is impressing everyone.

"I'm sure once he gets used to the way we play, and the more games he plays, he will be a big hit.

"Tevez can bring directness and excitement. He is a player that I'm sure the fans at Old Trafford will love.

"Wayne Rooney and him are from a similar mould.

"You saw what he did for West Ham and he is going to be a great addition to the squad.

"He likes to make things happen when he has got the ball, he also has raw strength and he has the presence to handle the big stage.

"He's also impressed in training and I'm sure he will impress the fans as well."

The Scotland midfielder will play a pivotal role in the forthcoming Euro 2008 double-header against Lithuania at Hampden and France in Paris but the United star has his eyes firmly fixed fighting his way in to the Old Trafford starting eleven, starting with Sunday's Carling Premier League opener against Reading at home.

Fletcher said: "Scotland has a big double-header and these games are important but my focus is on the beginning of the league with Manchester United and I hope we get off to a good start.

"It is exciting. We want to retain our title.

"At a club like Manchester United that's what it is all about. "Winning the Premiership last season was a great achievement but they want more and that's why it's great to be at a this club."

Vidic digs in for title race

NEMANJA Vidic has warned his United team-mates that they will have to improve just to stand still.

A look at the players brought in over the summer by the Reds' Premier League rivals tells the defender that retaining the title will be a huge task.

"We need to improve everywhere. If you want to win the Premier League and get to the Champions League final, everyone has to take one step up," he said.

"We have to be better this season. If we play at the same standard as last season, we will not be good enough to win the league."

While United have spent more than £50m on bringing in Nani, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves - with Carlos Tevez still to come - Chelsea have also brought in a host of new players.

Signings

Jose Mourinho has canny free signings in Tal Ben Haim and Steve Sidwell to back up the £13.5m he shelled out to sign French winger Florent Malouda from Lyon.

Liverpool have also made a major statement of intent, snapping up forwards Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel, winger Yossi Benayoun and midfielder Lucas Leiva.

And while Arsenal have been relatively quiet, signing Croat striker Eduardo da Silva from Dinamo Zagreb, Tottenham's willingness to spend £16.5 on Darren Bent suggests they can challenge.

Vidic is excited at the quality of United's close-season signings, with Nani impressing in their pre-season games.

"Nani looks great," the defender said. "He's sharp and strong, he has a lot of stamina and he will be an important player for our team."

HEINZE HAS UNITED FUTURE, INSIST FERGIE

Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted Gabriel Heinze can still have a future at Manchester United even if the Premier League reject his proposed move to Liverpool.

Heinze has a letter he believes entitles him to join the Anfield club, who have matched United's stipulated desire for a ?.8million transfer fee.

United officials contend the letter, signed by chief executive David Gill, does not over-ride the Argentina defender's contract, which still has two years to run.

Currently sidelined with a minor knock sustained during the Copa America, Heinze will have his future determined by the Premier League, who are due to assess the situation on August 20.

Yet, despite his stated desire to join the Red Devils' fierce north-west rivals, Ferguson does not believe there will be a problem with Heinze turning out for United again.

"Nothing has moved as far as Gaby is concerned," said the United boss.

"We have a meeting on August 20 which will settle the issue once and for all.

"We think our case is strong and we are depending on that.

"And, if it goes our way, Gaby definitely has a future here. He still has another two years left on his contract."

Tevez ties up United transfer

Former West Ham striker Carlos Tevez has finally completed his protracted move to Premier League champions Manchester United.

United confirmed the 23-year-old Argentina forward had joined on a two-year loan.

Tevez, who has been the subject of a long running Premier League investigation into third-party ownership, has been training with United all week.

Tevez can play against Reading on Sunday, but Sir Alex Ferguson said earlier on Friday that he will not use the Argentine international and instead he is likely to be pencilled in for next weekend's derby clash at Manchester City.

A club statement read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce that Carlos Tevez has been registered as a member of its first-team squad by the Premier League."

United have announced their squad numbers for the forthcoming 2007/08 Premier League campaign.

Among the Reds' summer signings, Owen Hargreaves will wear the No.4 shirt, with Gabriel Heinze moving to 14. Anderson will wear No.8 and Nani has been given No.17.

It has also been confirmed that Carlos Tevez, who was registered as a United player by the Premier League on Friday afternoon, will wear the No.32.

Heinze 'has a future at United'

Gabriel Heinze will not be alienated by the rest of the Manchester United squad if the Premier League's inquiry prevents him joining Liverpool next weekend, Sir Alex Ferguson has promised.

The defender might quickly become persona non grata in Manchester if he turns up on Merseyside, but that is another story. If he stays at United, Ferguson insists, United will stand by him.

Expressing admiration for Liverpool is not normally considered a wise career move at Old Trafford and several ex-players have expressed bafflement at Heinze's motives, but Ferguson is as confident the move will be blocked as Rafa Benitez appears to be of welcoming the Argentina defender to Anfield.

'We think our case is strong and Gaby definitely has a future here,' Ferguson said. 'He has another two years left on his contract and nothing that has happened needs prevent him playing for us again. He's still a very popular player in the dressing room and if this thing gets settled in our favour that should be the end of it. I would not be worried about selecting Gaby again. He's a warrior, a fighter. He won't let us down.'

Heinze's compatriot, Carlos Tevez, has received clearance in time to make his debut against Reading today, although Ferguson says he is more likely to follow his original intention and introduce him against Manchester City next week. The United manager admits he was tempted to sign Tevez when he was first made available a year ago, but felt there were too many complicating factors surrounding his ownership.

'Watching him play for West Ham last season, I kept thinking we should have signed him when we had the opportunity, but fortunately the chance came round again.' Ferguson said. 'We always knew he was a great player, but we wanted to sign him properly. We have had to wait a little while, but now I am happy we have done that, and avoided any backlash or issues.'

Tevez is just part of a United strengthening programme that saw Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson join the champions early in the close season and allow Ferguson to take his summer holidays for once without worrying about having to make signings. 'We did some early business and I was happy with the squad by the time I went on holiday,' he said. 'I felt I could switch off from football for a while, though that changed when the fixtures came out halfway through my break. As soon as that happens you start looking and planning the way the season might go.

'We've signed a couple of players for the future in Nani and Anderson, the kind of midfielder we need for European games in Owen Hargreaves, and we've got experience running right through the squad. What I'm hoping for this season is to be able to improve in the later stages of the cup competitions. I think anyone facing the challenge of an English season is the same, you need to have enough resources to still be strong at the finish. Sometimes you can get away with running on empty in the league, take the victory we ground out at City at the end of last season, but you can't win cups like that. You have to stay fresh.'

Ferguson still makes his own assessment of players' ambition and desire before allowing them to join United, though he says it is getting harder to make character judgments each season. Not because the players are so wealthy, but because so many are coming from overseas. 'You can't just look players in the eye any more, you have to go into their background and get reports,' he said. 'Managing millionaires is not that hard, as long as you've got the right sort of player in the first place. You still need players with good ability and the right amount of desire, just like you always did. You don't want to sign players who think they are better than they really are.'

Like most people, Ferguson expects the top four to remain the top four this season, and though he mentions Tottenham, Newcastle and Everton as possible breakthrough contenders, the emphasis is clearly on the word possible rather than probable. What he does think is that the big four clubs might not get everything their own way this season, with what might be termed the mid-table group of clubs spending money and seeking to improve.

'I think Portsmouth are going to be difficult to beat again, especially on their own ground,' he said. 'Harry has made some good signings, and I'm especially impressed with them picking up Sulley Muntari. We had a good long look at him and liked him a lot. [Muntari spent time at United as a youth, on a visit with Michael Essien.]

'Aston Villa will be hard to beat too. Martin O'Neill's teams usually are, and this is going to be his first full season at the club, with a proper amount of time to prepare. I'm expecting Reading to finish in that middle band, too. I've been very impressed with what they have done. They are a common sense team. They don't spend big or make silly signings, and every time I hear their chairman speak about football matters I usually agree with him. They strike me as a very well run club.'
