Re: OraQuick - Test Kit Availability
To what I read from the papers, you will need to buy AND use the test kit under the supervision of the clinic's doctor. This means that it is not an anonymous test, as positive results will be reported to MOH by obligation.
At present, there is no Over The Counter (OTC) product for "test @ home". Singapore's policy regarding OTC HIV test kits would be to let the US FDA domestically approve it first, before even considering it locally. In the US, there is currently no OTC HIV Test kits available. However, there is the option to purchase a Home Access Kit and to send in the blood samples to a lab and access your results through a telephone call. More information available from http://www.homeaccess.com/. Home Access is available in the US only. OraSure in the US are FDA approved for Point Of Care (POC) use, much similar to what AfA is doing at their Anonymous Testing Centre.

Re: OraQuick - Test Kit Availability
Dear All,
Only AFA is allowed the anonymous testing procedure. Although you can buy the test kit(s) from the two designated clinics, you need to do your test in the presence of the doctors, that would mean, you need to register, pay consultation fees & get notified if your result is positive - the only plus is you get your results immediately, albeit not anonymous. Hope this helps clear your doubts. Best regards, Action for AIDS

Re: OraQuick - Test Kit Availability
Hi AfA_hmor,
I have a question...please don't take offence with it. The anonymous test's only true advantage is psychological, isn't it? As if one is tested positive, they would need to consult with a HIV specialist for further testing and start a medical regime to manage the HIV infection. So at that point one's records would definitely be with the CDC. Then what's the purpose of having an anonymous test when ultimately one can't escape from letting the CDC know about your status? Besides, if CDC knows it, it isn't exactly the end of the world. Only your spouse would need to be informed. Your employers, friends, relatives, close ones would not even know it if you choose not to. But hey, your spouse deserves to know it...they're your charge and they deserve nothing other than the truth! HIV doesn't bite. It's just like any ordinary disease like diabetes and cancer. Would anyone feel ashamed of having them? It's a bloody virus too! It's definitely the social stigma...everyone should learn to cut out of it!

Re: OraQuick - Test Kit Availability
Dear Samfan,
Actually what you said is valid. Although that is true, but to a certain extent only. Clients tested positive at our ATS are given options to have their treatment in Singapore, but they need to disclose to MOH (CDC to treat them) or other alternatives. Please stay safe & be negative, you don't want to know what goes through with all HIV+ patients - be it monetary, time, relationship and emotions. It is just too much. Best regards, Action for AIDS

I remember sometime in June this year the oral quick test kit was selling at DSC, in fact I have bought 2 set. So, why is there a sudden ban from selling over the counter ? Was it because that test kit was not accurate ? Personally, I feel one need much courage to do a blood test at DSC, fear of meeting someone there ... |
