A 75-year-old Maoist cult leader has been accused of sexually abusing his brainwashed female followers and enslaving his own daughter in homes across South London for more than 30 years.

In a report on The Star Online, British prosecutors said that Aravindan Balakrishnan used physical and mental violence to keep the women in his cult under control.

They lived a life of violence, fear, isolation and confinement and were forced into sexual acts.

His own daughter, who was born to one of his cult members, was imprisoned in the house and never allowed to go to school, play with friends or see a doctor.

She finally escaped when she was 30-years old and was found to be suffering from diabetes.

Balakrishnan has denied 16 charges of cruelty to a child, false imprisonment, indecent assault, rape and assault.

Balakrishnan was the leader of a Communist group in the 1970s in South London who attracted followers with his charisma and energy and plans for world revolution and to overthrow what he saw as Britain's fascist state.

Over time, the men left and the commune evolved into "a cult of Bala", the prosecutor said.

According to The New Paper, those who knew Balakrishnan thought he was a "quiet chap" when he was a student at Raffles Institution and then the University of Singapore.

His Singapore citizenship, which was registered in 1960, was revoked in 1977.

The Home Affairs Ministry had accused him of engaging in "activities which are prejudicial to the security" of the country after he was named a radical "closely associated with Eurocommunists".
