Boosting security industry: Let's not jump the gun

LAST Saturday's article ("No way: Firms need flexibility, says association") correctly reported that there is a tripartite committee formed to look into bringing improvements to the security industry in Singapore.

Comprising representatives from the Union of Security Employees, the Government and industry representatives, including the Security Association (Singapore), the committee held its first introductory meeting just three weeks ago.

Thus, it is too early for any committee member to make judgments of any possible recommendations that the committee may make, especially since the representatives involved have not had a chance to discuss the specific details.

It is unfortunate and hasty of the Security Association (Singapore) to repeatedly make public statements against this tripartite effort.

We will continue to stand by our security officers and contribute actively to the tripartite committee discussions in pursuit of better working conditions for our officers.

We hope all parties will adopt a similar perspective in order to raise standards and productivity, and provide a career path for our security officers.

Hareenderpal Singh

President

Union of Security Employees
