Thumbs up Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss elected as NSP's new secretary-general

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

Lawyer Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss was elected as secretary-general of the National Solidarity Party on Sunday.

She takes over the reins of the opposition party after Hazel Poa, who had been suffering from chronic illness, stepped down as party chief last month following a two-month leave of absence.

The 50-year-old lawyer ran unopposed and was elected by 24 members in NSP's congress meeting on Sunday morning.

Chong-Aruldoss said that NSP will continue with programmes they have in place and prepare for the general election, which is expected to be held in 2016.

"We will ramp up party activities and increase our efforts in forming policy," Chong Aruldoss said in a phone interview Sunday evening.
"There are several bread and butter topics that are close tothe hearts of Singaporeans and part of NSP's job as a political party is to identifythe issues," she noted.

Chong-Aruldoss joined NSP in March 2011 and leads its law committee, which has drawn up the party's position papers on the Internal Security Act and recent changes to the mandatory death penalty.

Since February last year, she has also been running a clinic providing free legal counseling to Singaporeans.
