Govt seeks public feedback on no-alcohol zones, shorter alcohol retail hours




SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the government feedback channel REACH are seeking the public's views on designating no-alcohol zones at some public places, and shortening the sale hours of alcohol at retail outlets.

The public consultation begins on Monday and ends on 31 December 2013.

A ministry statement issued on Monday said the measures are meant to reduce the availability of cheap liquor at congregation hotspots to curb alcohol intoxication.

The purpose is to protect the general public, particularly residents, from threat caused by drinkers congregating at public places.

In the statement, the ministry noted that excessive liquor consumption is often associated with aggression and violent behaviour.

Alcohol intoxication also may cause individuals to have less control of their behaviour and act with less consideration for others. This gives rise to law and order problems such as disorderly behaviour and fights, as well as public nuisance such as noise pollution and littering.

Members of Parliament and residents living near congregation hotspots such as Robertson Quay and Little India have raised concerns that the drinking problems, worsened by the availability of cheap liquor from retail stores in the area, have posed safety issues and caused disturbance to the community as drinkers get intoxicated in the night.
