16 Singaporeans injured after tour bus skidded off Hokkaido highway

HOKKAIDO: A bus carrying 16 Singaporeans skidded off the Hokkaido Shimukappu highway in Japan on Tuesday (Dec 2), causing the driver and passengers to be sent to the hospital.

According to Japanese media reports, the incident happened at around 11.30am, and the bus slipped off the road near the junction of Shimukappu 237 Highway and Doto Expressway exit.

The reports also said that there had been an intermittent snowstorm in Shimukkapu in the morning, and quoted Japanese police as saying that the roads nearby were nearly frozen. The Japanese police have labelled the case as a bus slip accident and are investigating further.

The 52-year-old bus driver said: "I stepped on the brake right before the junction but it could not stop the slip completely."

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia that the Singaporeans on board the tour bus were treated for light injuries and have been discharged from the hospitals.

MFA also added that the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo has been working closely with the local Japanese authorities and the Singaporean tour company to give consular assistance to the affected Singaporeans.
